Core principles
Synedrix OS is guided by 12 core principles. Numbering is canonical and fixed. Cite by name and number, for example “Principle 4 (Governance before execution)”.
Principle 10 is the north star; the other 11 principles serve it.
Clusters
Every one of the 12 principles belongs to exactly one cluster, grouped by what it’s protecting.
| Cluster | Principles | Concern |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | 1, 4, 5 | Keeping an agent inside its lane |
| Architecture | 2, 3, 12 | Keeping the system maintainable as it grows |
| Human control | 6, 8 | Where human authority sits and how the system stays responsive |
| Accountability | 7 | How the system explains itself |
| Platform | 9, 10, 11 | The substrate everything runs on, and the point of it |
The principles
1. Bounded autonomy
Every agent operates within an explicit authority envelope. Boundaries are machine-readable and enforced by the platform, not implicit in prompt text.
2. Orchestration is the center of gravity
Coordination quality, not model power, is the durable value. Stable coordination patterns persist while models, tools, and agents change.
3. Specialised agents over mega-agents
Narrow, testable, governable roles beat one do-everything agent. Specialisation improves modularity and fault isolation.
4. Governance before execution
Governance is load-bearing infrastructure, not a wrapper bolted on after deployment. Policies and approvals are enforced centrally.
5. Shared context with scoped access
Agents share a context fabric of systems of record, operational memory, event histories, and telemetry. Least privilege is the default.
6. Humans stay above the automation layer
Humans define goals, constraints, policies, and escalation thresholds. The principle is human oversight, not human exclusion.
7. Explainability and audit by design
The system can always answer what happened, why it happened, and under whose authority it happened.
8. Event-driven execution
Signals, approvals, failures, and callbacks trigger workflows the moment they happen, rather than on a polling schedule.
9. One substrate, many domains
The OS is domain-agnostic at its core. Each vertical contributes a domain pack on top of shared foundations.
10. Trust is the real product (north star)
Trust is the ultimate output of the platform and the north star the other eleven principles serve.
11. Open by default, sovereign by design
Synedrix OS is open source and self-hostable. Every component can run entirely within a customer’s own infrastructure, with one recorded exception: the inbound Hookdeck Event Gateway is a proprietary managed cloud service (ADR-OS-013).
12. Deterministic idempotency, explicit state
Every side-effecting step carries an idempotency key and all state is declared, versioned and recoverable, so a run can be retried, replayed or audited from its recorded state alone. A step that cannot be made idempotent is never replayed automatically; it is reconciled or escalated. Determinism applies to effects and state, not to model reasoning.
